Cracked Lead Repaired

star star star star star
Rated 5/5 by Rachel Morgan

We noticed brown stains on the bedroom ceiling and water marks down the chimney breast after heavy rain. Your Local Roofers came out quickly, showed us clear photos of the cracked lead and explained in simple terms what needed doing. They took out the damaged section, fitted new lead neatly and sealed it properly around the bricks. No mess, no fuss and the price matched the quote. It’s rained hard since and the room is completely dry. Friendly team, tidy work and a written guarantee included.

New Flashing by Dormer

star star star star star
Rated 5/5 by Emma Collins

Wind-driven rain was leaving a damp patch by our dormer and we kept having to repaint. Others had tried a bit of sealant but it never lasted. YLR were brilliant from start to finish: turned up when they said, explained clearly what needed doing and replaced the flashing neatly into the wall with a smart finish around the tiles. Polite lads, careful with the garden, and the price matched the quote. Several wet days later and the room is bone dry.

Bay Roof Lead Replaced

Rated 5/5 by Paul Henderson

We had water staining above the bay window and a chilly draught on windy days. Your Local Roofers inspected, took pictures and talked us through the options without any pressure. They removed the tired old covering on the bay and fitted a new lead top with crisp edges that looks great from the street. They also sorted a bit of rotten wood at the front while they were there. No mess, no surprises on the invoice, and no more leaks.

Phoned after 10:00 and explained roof leaking where a soil pipe exited. Brion offered to inspect and quote that afternoon. I agreed the reasonable quote and the leak was fixed within the hour. Thus saving my ceiling from the torrential downpour that followed that night.

Your Questions

Your Questions

What typically causes leaks around leadwork and flashings?
Most leaks come from cracked or split lead (age/thermal movement), failed mortar in the chase, upstands cut too low, short or poorly formed laps, missing or undersized saddles/soakers or back gutters, over-fixing or wrong lead code causing creep, debris blocking valleys and outlets, missing kickout flashings at wall junctions, corrosion from dissimilar metals, or nearby underlay/eaves defects that let water track behind the detail.
Do I need a full replacement, or can you repair local sections?
If the installation is generally sound, we can often carry out localised repairs—e.g. renewing step flashings, replacing damaged soakers, or inserting a new valley liner. Where detailing is fundamentally wrong (e.g. upstands too low, no expansion joints, ponding in a box gutter), a strip-back and correct rebuild is the reliable long-term solution. We’ll show photos and outline pros/cons, costs and lifespans for each option.
Which lead code should be used?
It depends on position and exposure. Typically Code 4/5 for step/apron flashings and Code 5/6 for valleys and box gutters. Heavier codes reduce creep and cracking on larger spans. We size bays and joints to allow for thermal movement, and we treat new lead with patination oil to control staining.
Can you match the existing look of my leadwork?
Yes. We source the closest profiles and form details to suit your roof, then dress and finish neatly. New lead weathers over time; we apply patination oil to control early staining and blend in. Where an exact match isn’t possible (e.g. discontinued verge caps or unique bay details), we’ll show photo options before work starts.
My bay roof lead is rippled and split—can that be fixed?
Rippling (“creep”) and splits usually mean over-wide bays or insufficient allowance for movement. We typically re-form the bay with correctly sized lead sheets, drips and welts, introduce expansion joints, and ensure the substrate is smooth and supportive. This prevents repeat failures.
Do you install secret or box gutters at abutments?
Yes. We re-form falls, re-line in lead or GRP, create proper outlets/scuppers, and protect vulnerable junctions. Where structure limits fall, we’ll be clear about realistic outcomes and maintenance to manage standing water risk.
Will you need scaffolding?
It depends on height, access and complexity. Many abutments are reached via ladders/towers; long runs, parapets or box gutters often require scaffolding. If needed, we arrange it and include it within your fixed price.
How long does work usually take?
Localised flashing or a short valley can be done in a day. Dormer/bay re-leads and larger valleys typically take 1–2 working days, weather permitting. Your quotation confirms the programme and sequencing.
Will my home be weatherproof during the works?
Yes. We work in manageable sections, keep junctions temporarily sealed as needed, and monitor forecasts so the roof remains safe and weather-tight at each stage.
Which areas do you cover?
We service homeowners and commercial businesses throughout the whole of Bolton and its surrounding areas, including; Atherton (M46), Egerton (BL7), Farnworth (BL4), Horwich (BL6), Kearsley (BL4), Little Lever (BL3), Radcliffe (M26), Tyldesley (M29), Walkden (M28), Westhoughton (BL5) and further afield.
Are you accredited and insured?
We’re fully insured to perform all domestic roofing work, with £1m public liability and £10m employer's liability insurance. We're also accredited by the NFRC, Trustmark and Guild of Master Craftsmen, and work to recognised industry standards. You’ll have peace of mind from qualified installers, documented processes and clear aftercare, backed by our written guarantee.
How do you handle unforeseen issues mid-job?
If we uncover hidden defects (e.g. decayed decking behind a valley), we pause, show you photos, and issue a simple written variation with options and costs. Nothing proceeds without your approval—so there are no surprises on the final invoice.
